Do you feel awesome?
If you answered yes then you’re okay, you could stop reading here and go now! If you are still reading, I’m going to out on a limb and say you answered no; or at least, not all of the time. The truth is everybody feels less than awesome sometimes. It’s hard to feel good about yourself all of the time, and that’s okay.
However, the way you approach the situation when you’re not feeling good about yourself is whats going to make the difference. Your coping strategy will make a difference to how quickly you get back up and start fighting again.
Your brain is a phenomenal tool, use it!
I had a dream not so long ago, the kind that when you wake up makes you feel all icky inside like it was real.
I was stood on a cliffside admiring the ocean watching the waves crashing into the shoreline. The sea was rough but the water was clear and the day bright. I felt a sense of calm and admiration for the beauty and power of the waves.
Then suddenly out of nowhere a wave crashed into the cliff and flooded my feet causing me to slip over. It was then that I noticed the cliff had become steps, steep and high. As I slid down the steps to the last, I had an overwhelming feeling of panic; I knew I couldn’t possibly slip over the edge.
All of a sudden there was a man there, nobody I know, but he said: “you better watch it, that’s a long way down.” (thanks for that, good advice!!)
I knew I had to start climbing quickly before the next wave came in and dragged me over the edge. So that’s what I did.
Climbing those steps was arduous, they were so high and crumbled each move I made, and my body felt like a lead weight. The fear I felt was tremendous, but I couldn’t let myself go. Using every ounce of strength and determination I had, I eventually got to the top, and to safety.
Then I woke up!
Find a different perspective.
I was pretty stunned when I woke up, the feeling of terror wouldn’t leave me. But, then after thinking about it for a while, I realised, It wasn’t a nightmare. It’s all the emotions I’m feeling right now played out in my brain.
I hadn’t been feeling very good about myself, and I could have interpreted the dream one of two ways. I could have seen it as a message to give up because it’s too hard and allowed negativity to weave its way into my thoughts. Poisonous beast!
Or, I could choose to see that no matter what happens I always fight and find the positivity to carry on; because I’m awesome!*
*High fives myself!
Say no to negativity and feel good about yourself.
Negativity is almost like taking a walk down easy street. (If you watched season 7 of the walking dead, you’d probably want to punch me in the face right now!!)
It’s probably much easier to give up and not try. Not to want to work hard, but what will that do to your self-esteem or mental state? “Nadda”!
Negative thoughts almost always come from feelings of inadequacy. Feeling like you’re not good at something, you’re not smart enough or can’t do things. Yes, I’m talking about those limiting beliefs again! The personal relationship you have with yourself is the most important one you’ll ever have.
The trick to challenging those thoughts lies in the use of a single word. The word yet! Add yet to any sentence, and you will see that one simple word can change the way you think about anything. Instead of a full stop, that’s it the end of the sentence; now there’s room for more words.
For example; I’m no good at this… add yet and then it becomes; I am no good at this yet, so I will try X, Y or Z to get better.
Find your inner awesomeness.
If you’re feeling stuck and don’t feel good about yourself, you need to make change happen now! Vow to make it different and find a way to feel good.
Guess what; you are awesome, you are unique, and you deserve self-love. The following rules make an excellent place for you to start finding your inner awesomeness.
Know yourself – I love this personality quiz I took recently. Reading the answers, it told me things I knew about myself but didn’t really pay much attention to. Studying myself has given me the chance to get a clearer idea of who I am and how to use both my strengths and weaknesses to my advantage.
Embrace yourself – Challenge your negative thoughts and limiting beliefs daily. Every time you think you can’t or your not, find a solution and be proactive.
Surround yourself with encouraging and supportive people – Negative people or emotional vampires, as I call them drain you of happiness. Try to avoid spending time with people who bring you down or make you feel bad about yourself.
Know what you want – Get a definite idea of your goals and aspirations. Remeber your past is not a roadmap for the future, you can do anything you set your mind to if you want it enough.
Make the impossible possible – Turn impossible into I’m possible! Find your strength and push through, the things that challenge us only make us wiser and abler.
Don’t be afraid to fail – Failure is a part of life but finding a way to get back up see the problem and try again is what counts, never give up on yourself or your dreams.
Learn to embrace confrontation – In life, there will always be people waiting to oppose your opinions or judge your actions. When faced with confrontation, don’t run and hide face it head on stand tall and strong. Agree-to-disagree, but be kind, gentle and humble.
Practice your craft – Once you know what you’re good at and the things you do best, practice, practice, practice! Strive to be the best; nobody gets anywhere being “just ok” at things. Make yourself proud.
Work your ass off – That’s right! Work your ass off; nobody said things were going to be easy, the road to success rarely is.
There will be challenges, roadblocks, and hardship but that doesn’t mean you will never get there.
Believe in yourself. You know what they say “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Do what is right – Be humble and honest. Be the kind of person who helps others. Make ethical choices and live with a moral conscience. Know that doing what’s right won’t always be what’s convenient.
The truth is you don’t have to find your inner awesomeness; you always had it, it’s been there inside all along.
It may be suppressed, but you have the tools to dig it out and be who you want to be. Stand out and be an individual. Love yourself for who you are because that’s the person you’ll be spending the rest of your life with!
You already are awesome you just have to believe it. You can do it, You deserve it!
