Do you feel as though you’re running on empty every day?
More often than not most of us are just not that in tuned into how our bodies really feel. That is until something goes wrong. We notice if we feel more tired than usual, we have a stomach ache or start to suffer from numerous ailments. Generally, simple malaise is caused by not making healthy food choices and what we choose to consume on a daily basis. Food is the fuel that powers our machine. That said, not all food is created equally and what you put in your body is exactly what you will get out.
There is something in the saying “you are what you eat”.
Ultimately, our bodies are designed to regenerate, rejuvenate and procreate; that’s it, the imperative of nature!
The only way to stop this happening is to throw in obstacles. Here’s a pretty simple explanation of this, Imagine a river flowing freely, now throw in a rock! What happens? The water flows around the rock. Now throw in more rocks, what happens? You get a dam; Once you build a dam, everything stops.
Our bodies are the river, and the bad food we eat is the rocks. Do you ever eat something you know isn’t good for you and feel really crappy afterwards?
Through no fault of their own, the average person is usually uneducated on what it is to be healthy really and what is considered healthy foods. Myself included.
The moment my light went on!
This time twelve months ago I was not a healthy person at all, and boy did I know it. However, I started feeling worse than “normal”. I began to feel excessively tired, to the point where I wasn’t able to stay awake in the afternoons. Then there was the constant migraines and pain I felt in my body each day. I just feel horribly ill! Not to mention the extra two stone I gained in a short period of time.
I kept putting off a visit to my GP. I figured it was the late nights, poor diet and managing my daughter who has ASD. That alone is enough to floor anyone. Call it intuition, or just the fact I have been dealing with all the other stuff for years now I knew this was different. I did finally make that visit. After an array of blood and (ah hem) variety of other tests! I received a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is the most common musculoskeletal condition after osteoarthritis. Still, it is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Its characteristics include widespread muscle and joint pain and chronic fatigue, amongst other symptoms.
Having the diagnosis and being horrified at the list of heavy-duty pain relief options. I decided to opt for a more natural approach and try living a healthier lifestyle first.
ONE DAY OR DAY ONE. YOU DECIDE.
Fortunately for me, Juicing and blending has become somewhat trendy of late, and since watching several documentaries on the subject, I got to thinking! The majority of what I’d put in my mouth on a daily basis is crap! Let me define crap for you!… We regularly dined on takeaway food, sandwich deals from the supermarket and occasionally if I was feeling totally exhausted toast and cereal!
I am well aware this means my children aren’t particularly healthy either. For which, of course, I feel the appropriate amount of mum guilt, trust me! The thing is, It isn’t that I don’t know the basics of feeding my family healthy food. If you haven’t heard the phrase “five a day” floating about over the past few years where have you been?!
Fibromyalgia really was the “kick up the bum” I needed, and our lives changed drastically from that day on.
When you really start taking your health seriously and start to do some research the sheer volume of information out there can seem so overwhelming and daunting. Almost enough to make you want to give in before you start. Believe me, I know!
I started by following a plan by the lovely Kris Carr and took her green drink a day challenge.Within just ten days following the program I couldn’t believe the difference it made to my life, my energy levels were through the roof. I cleaned my house properly for the first time in a year ( totally gross but different story!!) My headaches disappeared I felt alive, not to mention the compliments I was getting from friends and family about my radiant skin and healthy glow.
The difference a few innocent fruit and vegetables has made to my daily life is profound!
BEING FIT AND HEALTHY ISNT A FAD OR A TREND, IT IS A LIFESTYLE.
Making the change and adjusting your lifestyle will not be easy at first, it is a journey of constant learning, trial and error.
The food we choose without thinking is often a subconscious decision. Believe it or not but eating sugar and processed foods create a vicious cycle spurred on by addiction. Technically it’s not even our fault! As with any addiction the only cure it is to abstain, be focused in mind and determined to break the habit.
What you put into your body is what you get out. Once you decide to make a change, it is essential to shift your mindset from a fundamental need to eliminate feeling hungry and be aware of what your body is telling you and what it needs. In other words, see hunger as more than a feeling.
You’re probably thinking, whaaaaat right now, right?! However, the more you learn about and understand food the more that will make sense.
Food is fuel and nature designed its fruits to nourish on a functional level.
The higher quality of food you put in your body the higher quality your health. Most of the food we consume daily is hybrid, genetically modified, coloured, cooked, processed and destroyed. Basically, an empty shell which is what our bodies and minds sadly become over time.
One particular rule I like to keep in mind as I shop for food is the rule of handling! Before you put something in your shopping basket think to yourself; How many other people have handled this product? How many processes has this item been through before I picked it up from the shelf? If the thought of that is not enough to have your toes curling, then I don’t know what is!
Food can be medicine.
I am living proof, and I am entirely convinced that this is absolute truth. We know the basics, Vitamine C for a cold, fruit and vegetables are good for you etc. But making the right food choices goes so much deeper than this. The nutrients in food enable the cells in ou bodies to perform its necessary functions. Many diets encourage us to view food as the enemy, but instead, we should see food as a way to create health and reduce disease. Making healthy food choices can either heal or harm our bodies.
I believe it’s the not knowing where to start that creates resistance, but there are so many fantastic resources out there that can help you take your first steps.
There will always be “naysayers”, controversies and contradictions but you are on your own path and know your own body. Once you start to connect the dots and get a sense that what you have been doing so far with your life hasn’t been working so well change will come quickly.
Making healthy food choices comes down to not just physical wellness but mind and spirit as well. Choosing health has changed my life; Once you learn this stuff you cant unlearn it! I am by no means an expert and most certainly still have a long way to go.
Almost one year on from the day I decided to make the change, and this is one habit I will never give up. I am not a vegan or vegetarian, I eat fish but no other meat, officially that is a pescetarian, but I’m not into labels I simply eat food that I know will nourish and heal my body.
