With a bit of hessian wrap made to look pretty, these would make excellent gifts for any occasion.
You will need:
- Air dry clay
- Seed mix (we used “sleepy” seeds lavender, poppy, violets, bergamot, chamomile)
- Rolling pin
Make your paper case:
Cut a length of paper approximately 5 inches wide. Using a rolling pin, wrap the paper around until it curls. Now fold in the ends to close off the bottom, and you have a case, Marvellous !!
Set this aside for later.
Make your clay:
In a large bowl mix, 5 ( Dessert spoon-ish! ) parts Air dry clay with 1 part compost together.
Sprinkle in your seed mix and give it a good stir to distribute evenly. Slowly add water approximately 5ml at a time until the mixture forms a soft, sticky texture.
Take a good egg size lump of clay and roll in the palm of your hands until smooth.
It might be a good idea to have a bowl of water for washing to hand at this stage. Otherwise, you will be full of gunge having to turn taps on thus making a mess at the sink.
Place the clay balls into the paper cups you prepared earlier and set aside to dry for a day or two.
Once the clay is dry, the pods are ready to be planted in a planter or seedbed. It is pot luck as to which seeds grow, but that’s only half the fun!
Wrapped in a hessian pouch inside a plant pot, these would make an ideal gift for Mothers day, as an alternative to chocolate at Easter or to sell at a craft fair, etc.
